Tianjin Union Medical Center is the model unit of national healthcare service resources adjustment. The Center was merged from original second center hospital, Binjiang Hospital and Red Cross Hospital and opened to the public on May 2004 after two years of intense construction. The second phase project of the hospital was to be one of the 20 Popular projects in Tianjin , and outpatient wards are all put into use.
The hospital handles more than 1 million outpatient clinical visits and emergency visits per year. The discharged inpatients are over 36,000, and over 18,000 operations are performed annually. This is much more than the cases handled by the three hospitals before merging.
Departments of Coloproctology, Spinal Surgery, Oncology of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medical, Digestive surgery, ENT, Vascular surgery are hospital specialties which have fine reputation nationwide. Departments of Bone and Joint Surgery, Hernia Surgery have been in the forefront of medical technology in their representative field in the city of Tianjin. Intensive care unit (ICU) is well equipped. The emergency center’s “green channel” is fully staffed 24 hours per day. The number of critically ill patient treated in the hospital is in the forefront in Tianjin.
Tianjin Union Medical Center is the affiliated hospital of Nankai University. It is the clinical medical school of the Fourth Military Medical University and Tianjin Medical University. It is also the clinical training base for Tianjin Traditional Chinese Medical University.
Tianjin Union Medical center is Tianjin Pathological diagnostic center, the affiliated unit of Tianjin Hospital Management Quality Control Center，and also the affiliated unit of Coloproctology Committee of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medical. Tianjin Oncology Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medical, Tianjin Spinal Surgical Institute, Tianjin Coloproctological Institute and Tianjin Apnea Treating Center are attached to the hospital.
In recent years, the hospital undertakes hundreds of bureau-level, municipal-level, national-level, and international-level scientific research projects. Tianjin Union Medical Center is also the digestive endoscopy training base of Chinese Medical Association. Nano-Optics and Molecular Medical LAB has been established through the collaboration between the hospital and Information Technical Science College of Nankai University. In 2010，the hospital was designated by the Ministry of Health to organize an emergency medical rescue team. Being one of the six national medical rescue teams , our team will undertake the emergency tasks in North China.
The hospital was awarded the title of Nationwide “Pioneer Workers” of Earthquake & Disaster Relief and Home Rebuilt, it has also recognized as the Collective Honorary title of Fighting Against SARS granted by the Ministry of Health, and the Advanced Unit of Tibet Medical Assistance issued by the Ministry of Health.. The hospital has received the third installment of "National Cicilized Unit" Award in 2011 and won the honorary title of "2006-2010 Outstanding Units of Health Law Publicity and Education" issued by the Ministry of Health.The hospital party committee was awartded the title of outstanding grass-roots party orgnization. Doctor Li Weilian got Third national moral models Award nomination.
